Where in the world can this “sui generic” feat be duplicated. Indeed this is a tautological occurrence, not statement, as the lexicon implies, we Capiceños can be proud of!
A “sui generic” clan of sagacious literati emerged in Roxas City with Dr. Paulo Potato Villanueva’s topping the 2008 Medical Board of Medicine Examination. The young doctor who graduated magna cum laude from UST and a 4th placer of the 1,513 who hurdled in this year’s Board Exam in Medicine is the son of Dr. Renato A. Villanueva and Mrs. Susan I. Potato who are graduates of UST. He came out 11th placer in the Board Exam in Medicine 1976 and topnotcher in Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Board Exam in 1986. Dr. Renato A. Villanueva is now the Chief Surgeon at the Philippine Heart Center and the pride of Capizeños.
Paulo’s elder sister, Irene Potato Villanueva, is, likewise, a product of UST who graduated magna cum laude and a 5th placer in the 2005 Board Exam in Medicine. An unusual feat indeed because their “lolo”, former topnotcher City Councilor Arturo L. Villanueva of Roxas City, is also a magna cum laude in the pre-war years and a 6th placer of the Board Exam in Medicine in 1941. Tio Turing ran for the Mayorship of Roxas City but lost to the late Mayor Teodoro Arcenas in the 1981 block voting polls during martial law years. This scribe who also ran for City Councilor then lost along with Tio Turing in that martial law elections. It was he who taught this writer the rudiments and leading principles of Rotary.
Dr. Paulo Potato Villanueva’s grandma, Ofelia A. Villanueva, Librarian in her own rights, is very proud of her grandson, granddaughter, son, and husband. And who wouldn’t? This is one rarity of rarities for the books, Guinness Book of World Records. Where in the world can this “sui generic” feat be duplicated. Indeed this is a tautological occurrence, not statement, as the lexicon implies, we Capiceños can be proud of! Plaudit and congratulations to the proud “lola”, Mrs. Ofelia A. Villanueva, also a rarity among librarians during her time. Nonetheless, the proudest beyond description in the family of unusual sagacity is Paolo’s Uncle Melo, a mainstay in the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs. Melo, as he is referred to by close friends, is as talented too akin to his nephew, niece, brother and his late father. He does his job well with finesse and requires no further instructions. Needless to state, a mango tree will never bear acorns, that’s one implicit truism.
